Turkey outlines plans for 'paradigm shift' in energy use ahead of climate summit
The plan calls for $500 billion in investment and would raise electric cars to 20 million while keeping coal workers protected in a just transition.
- On Friday, Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar revealed the National Energy Plan 2040, targeting 36% electrification by 2040 and a "paradigm shift" away from coal-dependent energy consumption.
- The Turkish Energy Ministry reported coal accounted for 33% of power generation last year, while solar and wind provided nearly 23%. Bayraktar aims to more than quadruple renewable energy usage over the next 13 years.
- Achieving this transition requires $500 billion in investment over 13 years, with $210 billion from Turkish public sector companies and the rest from foreign sources. Coal mining currently provides at least 30,000 to 40,000 jobs.
- Bayraktar stated electric car numbers will increase from 500,000 to 20 million over 13 years, while Black Sea gas production will double to 7.5 billion cubic meters annually in the coming years.
- Hosting the COP31 summit in Antalya next week, Bayraktar described "turbulent times" in energy markets and acknowledged it is "very difficult" to reach carbon neutrality in less than three decades amid geopolitical challenges.
