Air Defense Systems Deployed at Mar-a-Lago and Palm Beach Airport
Federal officials said the systems are meant to counter aircraft and drones, while the Secret Service cited a heightened threat environment.
On Friday, October 30, 2026, the U.S. Secret Service confirmed deployment of surface-to-air missile systems at Mar-a-Lago and Donald J. Trump International Airport, with NORAD and U.S. Northern Command providing the defense assets.
Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew C. Quinn reported a 40% increase in threats against protectees in July compared to the prior year, citing a 'heightened threat environment' that prompted the agency to request enhanced protective capabilities.
The deployed Avenger Air Defense Systems, or 'SHORAD,' are designed to counter aerial threats including drones. Aviation expert Michael Leighton called the visible missile systems a deterrent: 'These missiles were put in place in public where people could see them for a reason, and I wouldn't be alarmed. I would be relieved.'
More than 160 planes and drones have breached airspace restrictions over Palm Beach since October 2025, prompting officials to advance a pending proposal for 'Special Air Traffic Rules' that would establish a permanent no-fly zone.
NORAD and USNORTHCOM declined to provide tactical specifics regarding the deployment, stating 'Due to security considerations, we cannot provide tactics, techniques and procedural specifics,' and referred further inquiries to the USSS.
