Trump to attend dignified transfer of US soldiers killed in Iran strikes
The two soldiers were supporting Operation Inherent Resolve and were killed in an Iranian missile and drone attack, the Pentagon said.
- U.S. Army soldier Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was killed on Sunday, July 19, 2026, during a controlled detonation of a downed one-way attack drone at Erbil Air Base, Iraq.
- Following his death, Swinton will receive the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Action Badge and be posthumously promoted to staff sergeant, the Pentagon said, as the incident remains under investigation.
- Gen. John L. Dawber, commanding general of the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, said Swinton "took great pride in his work and the people around him." A second service member received treatment for "a minor injury."
- Nearly 100 American service members have sustained injuries in Iranian attacks throughout the Middle East this month, with Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell reporting that 96% of those injured have since returned to duty.
- The White House confirmed that President Trump will attend the dignified transfer of Swinton's remains at Dover Air Force Base on Tuesday evening, honoring the fallen soldier.
