Trump signs executive order directing federal funding cuts to PBS and NPR
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on May 1, 2025, directing federal agencies to cut funding for PBS and NPR across the United States.
The order follows claims by Trump that these broadcasters show bias and instructs agencies to halt funding and identify indirect public financing sources.
PBS, NPR, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting rely on roughly half a billion dollars annually, mostly funneled through the CPB, a private nonprofit independent of federal control.
PBS CEO Paula Kerger said the order threatens educational programming, adding, "There's nothing more American than PBS," while CPB and NPR intend to legally challenge the action.
The cuts could severely impact local stations dependent on public funds, which have been vital during natural disasters, but it remains uncertain if Congress will enact the rescission.
