Trump says one of National Guard members shot in Washington DC has died
Rahmanullah Lakanwal is charged with first-degree murder after a targeted ambush near the White House killed West Virginia National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom.
- Thursday, President Donald Trump announced that Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, of the West Virginia National Guard, died from wounds sustained in the shooting near the White House.
- Video reviewed by investigators showed an ambush-style shooting near Farragut Square on Wednesday, and authorities arrested Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, investigators say.
- Armed with a.357 Magnum, the suspect shot one Guard member and fired multiple times at the second; both Beckstrom and Wolfe had been sworn in less than 24 hours before the high-visibility patrol near 17th and I streets.
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Trump asked to add 500 Guard members after the shooting, and federal prosecutors filed charges including three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed.
- The attack has prompted scrutiny of immigration vetting and asylum cases, with officials saying investigators treat it as terrorism and the FBI seizing devices linked to Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who resettled in 2021.

National Guard Promotes Public Safety

Over the past several months, President Trump has directed Guardsmen to come alongside local and federal law enforcement agencies to help restore order. From 2019 to 2024, the violent crime rate in cities increased more than 60 percent. Last year, it was double the rate in rural areas. As the violence skyrocketed, …

Perhaps the most atrocious focused assault on 26 November in downtown Washington, which is just a few blocks off of the White House, where two United States National Guard troops were in critical condition, is a blacker chapter in the history of the world of global terror. The fact that the suspect is an Afghan […] The post The Washington Attack & Global Security Threat appeared first on Modern Diplomacy.
Occupation, boycott, death: The month that changed D.C.
I didn’t expect to begin this article on a sidewalk. But on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, around noon, I mentally finalized what I thought would be a clean two-week account of Washington’s slow tightening. I got off the Metrorail at 14th and Irving to join the #WeAintBuyingIt rally in front of Target’s entrances. A small crowd had gathered, calm and steady, holding signs. Someone turned to me and said, almost casually, “This is Week 36.” Thir…
