Trump Says He Looks Forward to Xi Summit Even as Tensions Mount
Trump said he will discuss Iran, trade and Jimmy Lai with Xi as the two countries try to preserve their trade truce.
President Donald Trump will travel to Beijing on May 14 and 15 for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where he plans to raise the case of jailed media mogul Jimmy Lai.
The 78-year-old former Apple Daily founder, Lai, is serving 20 years for collusion and sedition under Beijing's 2020 National Security Law.
Trump promised to "100 per cent get him out" of jail, telling conservative pundit Hugh Hewitt on Monday he would bring up the case again after discussing it in South Korea.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged China to leverage its diplomatic position to help open the Strait of Hormuz, citing that China purchases 90% of Iranian energy.
Despite being delayed once by geopolitical tensions, the two nations aim to stabilize their relationship while navigating challenges on trade, Taiwan, and the Iran war.
