Trump nominates Brett Matsumoto for BLS commissioner

Later this year, President Donald Trump plans to nominate Brett Matsumoto to head the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which has lacked a confirmed commissioner since Aug. 1.
After the Aug. 1 firing of former BLS commissioner Erika McEntarfer, Trump initially nominated E.J. Antoni, but the White House withdrew his nomination amid criticism.
Before the nomination, Brett Matsumoto spent the past year as a senior economist on the White House Council of Economic Advisers and has worked at the BLS since 2015, serving as a supervisory research economist.
Requiring Senate confirmation, the nomination would replace acting head William Wiatrowski and reassure investors and Federal Reserve officials who rely on BLS reports like the Consumer Price Index.
Amid warnings the statistical system could be harmed, a federal hiring freeze last year created staff shortfalls that forced the BLS to cut back its inflation survey and caused a six-week interruption in data.
