Vernon Youth Arrested After Pickup Truck Strikes Two Pedestrians Near Lumby, Killing One
Police say a 16-year-old Vernon youth was arrested after a truck struck two pedestrians, leaving one dead and another with non-life-threatening injuries.
On Saturday, a 15-year-old Lumby youth died after being struck by a pickup truck on a rural property near Lumby, while a second youth was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver, a 16-year-old Vernon youth, fled the scene immediately but was located and arrested by police that night, facing several potential criminal charges pending a future court date.
Numerous youth witnessed the incident and captured cellphone footage, prompting Cpl. Tania Finn, media relations officer with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, to urge anyone with information to contact the detachment.
Charles Bloom Secondary principal Josh Gutknecht and vice-principal Robyn Lindahl shared a letter Sunday to families, stating, "This is a difficult time for many, and we recognize that students and families may be impacted in different ways."
The BC Coroners Service has launched an independent, concurrent fact-finding investigation to determine how, where, when, and by what means the youth came to their unexpected death.
