10 Safety Infractions, Unrestrained Toddler Net Semi Driver over $1,600 in Fines Near Sicamous
The driver was cited for 10 safety infractions after officers found bad brakes, bald tires and a toddler unrestrained in the cab.
On Sept. 26, BC Highway Patrol officers stopped a semi-truck near Malakwa, fining the 46-year-old Calgary driver $1,674 and immediately pulling the vehicle from the road.
Authorities discovered 10 safety infractions during inspection, including "Defective lights and brakes" and "Bald and defective tires," while a one-year-old toddler was found unrestrained in the cab.
Further inspection revealed a cab held together with ratchet straps and a diesel leak, with officers also documenting a cracked windshield and a missing radiator grill.
BCHP Sgt. Michael McLaughlin stated the patrol focuses on removing unsafe vehicles and "removing people who are cutting corners" to protect professional motorists.
The truck and trailer cannot be re-licensed until all identified mechanical defects are repaired at the owner's expense, effectively removing the rig from service.
