Trelain Maddox’s Late TD, Duke Missed FG Gives Yellow Jackets First ACC Win of Season.
Georgia Tech running back Trelain Maddox rushed for 81 yards and three touchdowns, including a go-ahead one-yard score with 54 seconds remaining, leading the Yellow Jackets to a 28-25 upset victory over Duke at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday.
Despite driving deep into Yellow Jacket territory in the final minute, Duke kicker Gavin Strange missed a 33-yard field goal wide left with five seconds remaining, denying the Blue Devils a chance to tie or win.
Quarterback Alberto Mendoza completed 23 of 30 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown for Georgia Tech, while Duke committed six penalties for 71 yards after entering the game ranked 124th nationally in discipline.
Head coach Brent Key said Georgia Tech "played as a complete team," while Duke head coach Manny Diaz remained winless against the Yellow Jackets, extending his losing streak against the ACC rival.
Duke hosts rival North Carolina next Saturday while Georgia Tech travels to Virginia Tech, as both teams continue their Atlantic Coast Conference schedules following Saturday's pivotal result.
