Child Seriously Injured By Falling Tree At Wayland Summer Camp
Police say a child suffered life-threatening injuries and an adult was hurt after a tree fell at the camp, and investigators are still reviewing the incident.
On Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, a child suffered life-threatening injuries and a counselor was hurt after a tree fell at YMCA Camp Chickami in Wayland, Massachusetts, authorities said.
Emergency crews arrived at 139 Boston Post Road around 10:40 a.m. after a large tree fell, causing a domino effect that knocked down another tree, Fire Chief Neil McPherson said.
Firefighters and camp counselors freed the pair from the debris; the child was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital by MedFlight, while the counselor was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
West Suburban YMCA CEO Jack Fucci called the accident 'a traumatic experience for everybody,' noting the organization is providing support services as the camp remains closed through Wednesday.
Acting Police Chief Mark Hebert confirmed an active investigation into the incident is underway, with officials promising to share further information as it becomes available.
