Man Crosses Railroad Tracks with Oncoming Train to Rescue Woman Stuck at Crossing
A passing motorist lifted the gate and let her back up to safety just before a train arrived, witnesses said.
On Friday evening, 23-year-old Josiah Baur rescued Debbie Spoelstra after her car became trapped on railway tracks in Hobe Sound when a crossing arm lowered onto her vehicle.
Spoelstra was turning onto Bridge Road from Dixie Highway around 5 p.m. when the crossing arm descended, catching her car's antenna and pinning the vehicle directly in the train's path.
Baur, driving home from work, spotted Spoelstra's predicament, abandoned his vehicle, and manually lifted the crossing gate, allowing her to reverse to safety seconds before the train arrived.
The pair, who did not know each other, bonded over shared faith, with Spoelstra noting she has a 9-month-old grandson also named Josiah.
Witness Lizzy Dominguez captured the event on social media, while Spoelstra reported the crossing arm to Florida East Coast Railway for inspection, claiming it malfunctioned.
