Trans pastor leads Milwaukee's only LGBTQ+ affirming Christian campus ministry
Rev. Elias Henry says the ministry serves 70,000-plus college students and offers worship, meals and support for LGBTQ+ students.
At the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Kenwood Boulevard in Milwaukee, the Corner House stands as the city's only LGBTQ-affirming Christian campus ministry, led by the Rev. Elias Henry.
Serving the city's 70,000-plus college students, the ministry operates across from the UW-Milwaukee student union as the sole Christian campus ministry in Milwaukee offering an inclusive space specifically for LGBTQ individuals.
Henry is the first openly transgender Minister of Word and Sacrament for the Presbytery of Milwaukee and one of about a dozen transgender men serving as Presbyterian pastors nationwide.
"People come, and they say, 'I didn't know a place like this existed,'" Henry said, noting how pride symbols displayed alongside a cross welcome students who felt excluded from Christian organizations.
Henry aims to lead by example, asserting that faith and identity are compatible by emphasizing that God loves everybody without exception and grants everyone gifts to share with their community.
