Train Derails in Northern France, Injuring Around 20 People
On Friday, a passenger train operating the Rouen–Caen route derailed near Cléon in Normandy at approximately 7:54 p.m., French authorities confirmed.
French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot mobilized 140 firefighters to the scene, while the Seine-Maritime prefecture activated a departmental operations center and urged the public to avoid the area.
Around 20 people sustained injuries in the derailment, though Tabarot stressed the figure remains a "provisional count," and the train was carrying 180 passengers at the time.
SNCF Reseau suspended all traffic on the affected rail line, confirming the immediate priority is caring for passengers and restoring safe operating conditions.
Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the derailment, with authorities indicating that further information regarding the injured and future rail impacts will be provided.
