Inwood fire leaves 3 dead, 14 hurt after flames engulf NYC apartment building
Fire marshals are investigating the cause after the blaze spread through open doors and left about 100 residents displaced, officials said.
- A 3-alarm fire erupted at 207 Dyckman St. in Inwood, Manhattan, early Monday, killing 3 people and injuring 11 others after the FDNY responded around 12:30 a.m.
- Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore stated the blaze began on the second floor and spread rapidly through open apartment doors, noting: "The apartments that had the doors closed had very little impact, no fire. The apartments that had doors open had more impact, more fire."
- More than 190 fire and EMS personnel responded to the three-alarm fire, rescuing residents from fire escapes. Roughly 100 residents were displaced, with the Red Cross utilizing an MTA bus to provide temporary shelter.
- Assistant Chief of EMS Operations Cesar Escobar reported 14 people were treated by EMS, including 5 civilians in critical condition and 1 firefighter with minor injuries. Fire marshals are investigating the cause.
- The National Weather Service issued a special advisory for elevated fire spread risk across the region from late Monday into the evening. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the three deceased victims.
