Helena Foulkes Wins Democratic Nomination for Governor in Rhode Island
Nearly 49,000 voters had already cast ballots as Democrats and Republicans faced contested races for governor, Congress, attorney general and legislative seats.
On Wednesday, Rhode Island voters cast ballots in a competitive primary, with Governor Dan McKee facing a challenging rematch against former CVS Health executive Helena Foulkes in a race that polls show Foulkes leading by double digits.
Officials moved the primary from its usual Tuesday slot to Wednesday to give election administrators extra time to prepare. McKee's term faced scrutiny following the Washington Bridge closure, making the race a referendum on his handling of the crisis.
Early voting reached a state record of 48,899 ballots cast before Wednesday, while Republican voters chose between Dr. Stephen Skoly and Vic Mellor to challenge Democratic U.S. Representative Seth Magaziner. Statewide turnout passed the 10% mark by noon.
Candidates greeted supporters while casting ballots, with McKee dismissing polls showing him trailing Foulkes by double digits. Outside the gubernatorial race, progressive candidates challenged incumbents in Providence, testing the Democratic party's ideological divide.
Political analysts warned that major incumbent losses could signal a 'minor earthquake' in Rhode Island politics, as results will determine the November ballot and reshape the state's political landscape for years ahead.
