White Sox Get RHP José Urquidy From the Pirates in Trade for Minor League Pitcher
The White Sox added a veteran arm with a 3.66 ERA in Triple-A this season as they look for pitching help.
On Sunday, the Chicago White Sox acquired seven-year veteran starting pitcher José Urquidy from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor-league right-handed pitching prospect Félix Doroteo.
Pirates general manager Ben Cherington explained the team needed a 40-man roster spot after their starting rotation remained healthy throughout the season, making Urquidy expendable.
While Urquidy posted an 8.53 ERA in limited major-league appearances for Pittsburgh, he remained effective in Triple-A, recording a 5-4 record and 3.66 ERA across 17 starts this season.
Pittsburgh receives Doroteo, a 21-year-old right-hander in his first professional season, who recorded a 4.50 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 18 innings for the Arizona Complex League White Sox.
The White Sox, who recently improved to 55-49, sought pitching depth before the August 3 trade deadline, viewing Urquidy as a potential back-end starter or bulk bullpen option.
