Toyota to pay $750M in largest ever class action settlement
The deal covers 264,170 vehicles and remains subject to Federal Court approval, with Toyota saying a free remedy has been available since 2020.
Toyota Australia has agreed to pay $750 million to settle two long-running class action lawsuits over defective diesel particulate filters, marking the largest damages bill in Australian history.
Faulty diesel particulate filters impacted 264,170 Toyota HiLux, Fortuner, and LandCruiser Prado models built between October 1, 2015, and April 23, 2020, causing excessive white smoke, foul odors, and increased engine wear.
The settlement will be shared among 136,000 customers covered by the class actions, which were filed seven years ago in August 2019 over alleged value reduction and misleading conduct.
This agreement remains subject to Federal Court of Australia approval, while Toyota continues offering a free-of-charge remedy for affected owners available since 2020.
The $750 million settlement is nearly double Toyota Australia's record $380 million after-tax profit for the financial year ended March 31, 2026, underscoring the settlement's financial magnitude.
