- On Monday, Bavarian State Police confirmed a 57-year-old German tourist died in Egypt after being bitten during a hotel snake-charming show in Hurghada on the Red Sea.
- During the resort's entertainment program, one of two snakes, 'presumably' cobras, crawled into the man's trousers and bit his leg. Such performances often involve placing snakes around audience members' necks, authorities noted.
- The man 'exhibited clear symptoms of poisoning and required resuscitation,' police said in a news release. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
- Germany's Memmingen Criminal Police Inspectorate, directed by the Memmingen Public Prosecutor's Office, is investigating the incident. Authorities are awaiting toxicology results to confirm the cause of death.
- The World Health Organization reports about 5.4 million people are bitten by snakes annually, with up to 137,880 deaths. India currently leads global snakebite fatalities, reporting 51,100 deaths so far in 2026.
