Looking to See the Solar Eclipse From North America? Here's Where and when to Catch a Sliver
The moon will cover the sun for up to 2 minutes, 18 seconds in the path of totality, while most of Europe sees a deep partial eclipse.
On Wednesday, August 12, a total solar eclipse will traverse a 180-mile-wide path across Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. Millions of people across Europe, the Arctic, and North America will observe the astronomical event.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow that completely blocks sunlight. For mainland Europe, this marks the first totality opportunity since August 11, 1999.
Observers in northeastern North America will witness a partial eclipse, with St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, seeing 53% of the sun covered. Boston and New York will experience smaller coverage at 16% and 10% respectively.
Viewers must wear certified solar eclipse glasses during all partial phases; totality is the only time it's safe to remove them. The shadow's centerline reaches an astonishing latitude of 87.8 degrees north, just 153 miles from the North Pole.
This eclipse precedes total events on August 2, 2027, and July 22, 2028, offering eclipse chasers three opportunities to experience totality within 372 days. The consecutive eclipses draw significant global attention to the coming decade's astronomical spectacles.
