‘Digger’ Flops With $8 Million Opening, Becoming the Biggest Bomb of Tom Cruise’s Career
The satire opened on 3,321 North American screens and is tracking as Cruise’s lowest domestic debut in nearly 20 years.
Tom Cruise's satire "Digger" collapsed at the North American box office this weekend, earning just $8 million from 3,321 theaters, marking the actor's lowest domestic debut in 19 years.
Warner Bros. greenlit the project for $125 million, but polarizing reviews and audiences rejecting Cruise's turn as a potbellied, 65-year-old oil tycoon drove the poor performance.
With a production budget of $160 to $180 million and $100 million in marketing, "Digger" requires roughly $350 million globally to break even; analysts warn it will lose at least $150 million theatrically.
Meanwhile, Amazon MGM's "Verity" claimed the top spot with a $32.6 million debut, while "Digger" earned just $12 million from 73 international markets for a global start of $20 million.
Warner Bros. co-chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy are leaving the studio as its acquisition by Paramount is set to close next week, marking a turbulent transition for the embattled studio.
