New Toyota Engine Could Bring Major Fuel Economy Gains for Hybrids
Toyota says the new powertrain can cut fuel consumption by more than 15% and support hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery-electric models.
Toyota announced the development of an all-new modular four-cylinder 1.5-liter engine for electrification, with the company stating the design is "smaller and more efficient than ever before."
Targeting a 15% reduction in fuel consumption through improved thermal management and reduced electrical losses, the new engine replaces current 1.8-liter and 2.5-liter hybrid systems.
Via the "Multi-Pathway" platform, Toyota enables common architecture across BEV, PHEV, and HEV variants, allowing manufacturing operations to adjust powertrain mixes based on regional customer demand.
Operating in 53 countries, Toyota Motor Europe maintains a 7.2% market share; since 1990, TME has invested 12 billion euros in regional operations, directly employing 26k people.
Developing "highly efficient hybrid technology," Toyota aims for carbon neutrality, utilizing a system that runs on "renewable and carbon-neutral fuels" as part of its multi-pathway approach.
The new hybrid drive system is expected to offer reduced fuel consumption by 15%, while at the same time being smaller and more efficient.
Toyota, responding to the needs of its customers, is developing a new hybrid system that combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine in either a naturally aspirated or turbocharged variant, with lighter and more compact electric motors.
