This pilot is honoured every year in a U.K. town. Will Canada recognize his bravery?
- William Stuart McMullen, a 29-year-old Canadian pilot officer from Scarborough, died on January 13, 1945, while flying a Lancaster bomber over Darlington, England.
- McMullen died in a training exercise when his plane caught fire mid-flight; he managed to direct the aircraft clear of a heavily inhabited area of approximately 60,000 residents to protect the local population.
- Before crash-landing alone in a vacant field, he directed his six crew members to safely exit the aircraft by parachute, and his courageous deed is honored every year in Darlington with a memorial plaque and a street named in his memory.
- In a plea sent this week ahead of the 80th Victory in Europe Day anniversary, Darlington MP Lola McEvoy called on Canada to honor McMullen with a posthumous bravery award such as the Medal of Bravery or Star of Courage.
- Despite McMullen receiving wartime medals, his family fears his sacrifice is little known in Canada partly due to a five-year nomination limit for honors, and they hope this recognition will change promptly.

In September of 1939 when war was declared on Hitler’s Nazi Regime, the four communities of Port Elgin, Saugeen First nation, Saugeen Township, and Southampton had a total population of less than 5,000. By war’s end, there were close to 500 who had enlisted, including more than 15 ladies, to fight for the way of life that we all enjoy today.
