‘This is not a friendly’: Canadian women honing identity ahead of qualifiers
Casey Stoney says the matches will test Canada’s identity and help the team create more scoring chances while staying hard to beat.
Canada's ninth-ranked women's soccer team hosts Denmark in Montreal on Friday, with a second match scheduled for Toronto on Monday.
Canada head coach Casey Stoney emphasized the matches are not exhibitions but tests of the team's mettle after 18 months of competitive development. "This is a game we are here to perform and win," she said on Thursday.
Seeking offensive growth, the Canadians plan to take calculated risks to create scoring opportunities. "But we need to take different risks now to try and create more opportunities to score goals while remaining hard to beat," Stoney said.
Defender Gabrielle Carle noted Denmark is a "very good side" already qualified for the World Cup, providing high-caliber preparation for Canada. "I think for us, it's good preparation," Carle said.
These matches start an important stretch for Canada, which faces Panama in the CONCACAF W Championship quarterfinals on Nov. 28, seeking qualification for both the 2027 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
