Responding to the arrests of Mersin mayors Vahap Seçer, Abdullah Özyiğit, and Ahmet Serkan Tuncer, Murat Emir, the Deputy Group Chairman of the NEW Party, said, "We will not surrender the will of those elected by millions to behind-the-scenes operations."
CHP Group Deputy Chairman and Balıkesir MP Serkan Sarı reacted to the arrest of the three mayors with a statement on his social media account. Sarı stated that the mayors should be tried without being detained.
Tanrıkulu, a member of the New Party, strongly reacted to the arrests of Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Vahap Seçer and the mayors of Yenişehir and Mezitli. Stating that what happened was not an ordinary judicial process, Tanrıkulu said, "The issue is more than just the arrest of the mayors; it is the dismantling of elected and multi-party local democracy in Turkey."
Judicial authorities have issued successive arrest warrants in investigations targeting municipalities run by the CHP (Republican People's Party). In Mersin, Metropolitan Mayor Vahap Seçer, Yenişehir Mayor Abdullah Özyiğit, and Mezitli Mayor Ahmet Serkan Tuncer were arrested and sent to prison. In the investigation targeting Eyüpsultan Municipality in Istanbul, 13 people, including Mayor Mithat Bülent Özmen, were arrested.
