Otay Mesa Port of Entry Closed Due to Suspicious Package Discovery
A bomb squad is investigating the package, and officials told travelers to use the San Ysidro Port of Entry until further notice.
The Otay Mesa Port of Entry closed temporarily on Wednesday morning after authorities discovered a suspicious package with visible wires near a pedestrian bridge ramp.
Police identified the item just before 7:40 a.m. toward the back of a ramp connected to the pedestrian bridge's southwest corner, triggering an immediate security response.
Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol diverted all eastbound traffic at Siempre Viva Road, while officials directed travelers to use the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
The San Diego Police Department's bomb squad investigated the package reported around 9 a.m., which affected traffic on state Route 905 during the closure.
Authorities cleared the suspicious item around 11 a.m. and reopened the border crossing to pedestrian and vehicle traffic, restoring normal operations.
