New laws include a 7.5% surcharge on large tech firms, expanded nicotine taxes, and vehicle fees expected to raise $550 million annually starting fiscal year 2027.
- On Jan. 1, Washington enacted a suite of tax increases and consumer laws covering vehicles, fees, and IDs to address a budget shortfall some lawmakers estimated as high as $16 billion.
- The bill increases the advanced computing surcharge for firms with worldwide revenue over $25 billion and adds a 0.5% tax on Washington companies with over $250 million in taxable income, starting Jan. 1.
- Among transportation levies, lawmakers raised truck and passenger vehicle weight fees, car sales tax assessment , and a luxury-vehicle levy over $100,000, effective Jan. 1.
- Under the new rules, striking workers gain up to six weeks of unemployment insurance starting two to three weeks after a strike begins.
- Projections show starting in fiscal year 2027, the measures are expected to boost state revenue by $550 million annually, with the next legislative session beginning Jan. 12.
