Makkah Pact Purely Defensive, Says ISPR
Pakistan’s military says the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement has no offensive aim and is meant to reinforce existing ties and collective deterrence.
- Director General Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry told Al-Arabiya English on Wednesday that the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye is purely defensive, based on "collective deterrence" with no aggressive elements.
- Chaudhry rebuffed characterizing the pact as a "Muslim strategic alliance," clarifying it functions as a regional stability alliance containing "no offensive, no interference, no aggressive element" regarding regional aspirations.
- Asserting that relations did not "come out of the blue," Chaudhry described the partnership as complementary to Pakistan's relationship with China, noting Beijing understands these historic, formalised ties.
- The Director General noted "it's not a club that has been made for Muslim countries only," adding that the three countries will decide when to expand the alliance to new partners.
- Regarding potential responses to attacks, Chaudhry stated operationalization of defensive commitments remains private, with the three nations determining their course of action while maintaining independent relations with other alliances.
