Since his exile in France, the president of the Movement for Self-Determination of Kabylia (MAK), Ferhat Mehenni is expected to announce on 14 December the independence of the Berber-majority region of northern Algeria. It is essentially symbolic and should not have any consequences on the ground. But this new step taken by the movement is not at all pleasing to Algiers and risks still weighing on Franco-Algeria relations.

MAINTENANCE. Just a few days before the proclamation of the independence of Kabylia, the founder of MAK, Ferhat Mehenni, justifies this decision by a "continuous repression since 1963". Since France, where he lives in exile, he calls for a umpteenth time the Algerian regime to dialogue before this historic day.
