The nonprofit’s trauma support dogs have become a daily presence, and school officials say AP test scores rose while graduation stayed at 100%.
- Evergreen High School students are finding comfort in Norene and Polenta, two golden Labs providing a calming presence to help the student body process campus trauma.
- Following a September 2025 shooting where a 16-year-old student wounded two students before shooting himself, the school community sought new paths to healing.
- Principal Skyler Artes and counselor Amy Wells serve as handlers for the golden Labs, which were provided by the California-based nonprofit Canine Companions.
- With a 100% graduation rate, the school achieved remarkable academic outcomes, and the dogs were crowned prince and princess at last week's homecoming.
- Artes plans to acquire additional support dogs as the golden Labs are expected to serve for up to 10 years, maintaining program stability for future students.
