Ukraine’s Zelenskiy Says Territory Recaptured, Forces on the Offensive
Zelenskiy said the gains include a pipeline assault that cleared 75 square kilometers and recaptured 10 square kilometers, commanders reported.
- On Tuesday, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced Operation Veles, an unannounced offensive where Ukrainian troops used gas pipelines to outflank Russian positions near Kupiansk in northeastern Kharkiv.
- Ukrainian fighters turned an enemy tactic against the Russians, using underground gas infrastructure to advance. "Our fighters turned this tactic against the Russians and used the underground infrastructure against the occupiers with extraordinary success," Zelenskiy said.
- Further north, the "Vivaldi" operation cleared 75 square kilometres of Russian infiltration groups near the "fortress belt" of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, a senior commander reported last month.
- Zelenskiy described Kyiv's battlefield position as the strongest in the 4-1/2-year-long war, though he said additional Western air defence systems would further strengthen operations.
- Moscow's forces claimed to have captured 92 Ukrainian settlements since September, according to General Staff chief Valery Gerasimov; Ukraine's military dismissed these statements regarding the 1,200-km front.
