Six-Hour Airport Queue Warning as Millions of Brits Head Abroad This Summer
Travel groups warn the biometric checks could disrupt millions of holidaymakers and put up to $45.4 billion in visitor spending at risk, researchers said.
British travelers face border queues of up to six hours at major European airports this summer due to the European Union's new Entry/Exit System rollout causing significant holiday travel disruption.
The EES requires non-EU visitors to provide biometric data, including fingerprints and facial scans, upon entry to the Schengen Area, increasing processing times from between 20 and 25 seconds to as much as 90 seconds per traveler.
International Air Transport Association vice-president Rafael Schvartzman warned of a "hard risk" of missed flights, while the World Travel & Tourism Council analysis suggests Europe risks losing $45.4bn in visitor spending due to border delays.
Airlines including Wizz Air advise passengers to arrive at airports at least three hours before departure, as 18 per cent of holidaymakers said they would change travel plans due to border control queues.
Later in 2026, Britons face further travel changes with the introduction of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System , requiring visa-exempt travelers to pay €20 for entry permission to 30 European countries.
