Federal Pause Hits Dominion Offshore Wind Project
The Department of the Interior’s 90-day halt on a $11 billion offshore wind project may disrupt Virginia’s grid reliability and affect jobs, Dominion Energy said.
- Earlier this month the U.S. Department of the Interior ordered a 90-day temporary halt on offshore wind construction for Dominion's Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project, a roughly $11 billion development located 27 to 44 miles off Virginia Beach.
- A recent Department of Energy report warned electricity demand is rising nationwide, driven by data centers and large commercial electricity users, while CVOW required long-term coordination with the U.S. military.
- Dominion projects the facility will produce 2,600 megawatts, enough to power about 660,000 homes, and says the project is already well into the construction phase.
- Dominion warned the pause could disrupt grid planning, reliability, construction jobs, and supply chains, while Rep. Jen Kiggans, R-Va., said the timing raises concerns for Hampton Roads and military readiness.
- The pause intersects with ongoing grid modernization and regional reliability planning as Virginia utilities operate within PJM Interconnection spanning 13 states and the District of Columbia.
