Plaza Hotel in NYC Set to Close for at Least 4 Years to Restore Historic Facade
The landmark hotel says the work requires detailed planning and preservation compliance to protect its 119-year-old structure.
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts announced Wednesday that the 119-year-old Plaza Hotel will close for four years starting in January 2027 to restore its historic façade in Midtown Manhattan.
Designed by architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh in 1907, the 18-story hotel remains vital to New York City's architectural heritage, comparable to Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library.
Famed for its 1992 appearance in "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," the hotel has historically hosted notable guests including Truman Capote and the Beatles, cementing its cultural legacy.
The Hotel & Gaming Trades Council stated that 378 union members will retain the right to resume their jobs at the same pay when the hotel reopens; the union is finding alternative employment.
Fairmont said the restoration "reflects the complexity of maintaining a property of such architectural and historical significance," yet Columbia University professor Andrew Dolkart expressed surprise at the need for such extensive exterior work.
The legendary Plaza Hotel closes in January for a restoration that will last until 2031. Kevin McCallister's luxurious package with limo, pizza and ice cream is suspended as well as life in the condominium.
