NEW YORK, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Doubts over Elena Rybakina's fitness lingered until the eve of the U.S. Open and the Kazakh said she was amazed by her progress from an ankle injury after reaching the quarter-finals on Monday to edge closer to the world number one ranking.
Second-seeded Yelena Rybakina advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open. The Kazakhstani defeated Japan's Naomi Osaka (13th) 6-1, 6-4, and if she defeats China's Qinwen Zheng on Wednesday, she will become the new number one in the women's tennis rankings next week.
