He was imprisoned after returning from a 1967 expedition to the Andes for flying the flag on the peaks there. He was also arrested for political militancy, and spent six years living in the Northern Basque Country. He wrote about 50 books related to the mountains.

Juan Mari Feliu Dord (Pamplona, 1942) has passed away leaving a long path linked to mountaineering, hiking and outreach. Montañero, writer, articulist and federative leader, was one of the prominent figures of Navarren mountaineering for decades and dedicated much of his life to travel, study and make known the mountains and roads of Navarre and the Pyrenees.
