Maryland Schools Earn Higher Marks on the 2026 State Report Card, with Nearly 89% in the Top 3 Ratings
Nearly 89% of Maryland public schools earned one of the top three stars, while half reached the top two in the state report card.
On Thursday, the Maryland State Department of Education released the 2026 Maryland School Report Card, revealing that nearly 89% of public schools earned one of the top three star ratings, a three-percentage-point increase from 2025 results.
Maryland State Schools Superintendent Dr. Carey M. Wright noted that one in five schools increased their star rating this year, describing it as a "meaningful indicator of steady, statewide progress."
Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Jermaine Dawson reported that 53% of district schools are now three-, four-, or five-star rated, while Anne Arundel County saw 96% of schools reach three stars or higher.
Statewide data shows the number of five-star schools increased to 134, while one-star schools fell to 11, reflecting a significant shift in the distribution of school ratings across Maryland.
The Maryland State Board of Education is currently redesigning the accountability system to increase transparency and emphasize student growth, focusing more on how schools support students struggling with the curriculum.
