Electricity Generation at Kiev’s Thermal Power Plants Has Been Completely Destroyed as a Result of Attacks by Russian Armed Forces
Russia’s attacks have knocked out Kyiv’s own generation, forcing the capital to lean on nuclear plants 200 miles away and emergency gas-fired backups.
On Wednesday, Russian attacks cut power and water across Kyiv for hours, following a massive barrage of 289 drones and missiles that Ukraine's air force disabled 272 of.
Kyiv no longer produces its own power, forcing reliance on three nuclear plants—Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, and South Ukraine—roughly 200 miles away as Russian strikes gutted local stations.
DTEK, Ukraine's largest private power company, reported all three plants stopped generating and called it one of the "most serious attacks ever." Kyiv now relies on "islands," gas-fired plants maintaining hospitals and water pumps.
Tuesday's drone attempt targeted the substation powering Khmelnytskyi reactors, prompting Ukraine's energy minister to warn strikes threaten "the nuclear safety of all of Europe."
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy identified halting strikes on energy infrastructure as a priority for U.S.-brokered peace talks scheduled Nov. 10-11 in Abu Dhabi, as current repairs remain a "Band-Aid" for a city of 3 million.
Director of CDE Oleksandr Kharchenko warned that the generation at three metropolitan CHP plants was destroyed, and Kyiv residents should prepare for a lack of water for 1.5 days.
