Officials said the seizure cut off access to two hacking tools used to scan networks, phish victims and breach critical infrastructure worldwide.
- On Wednesday, the FBI and Justice Department seized scanning and phishing tools used by the hacking group Flax Typhoon, which officials associate with the Chinese government and disruptive cyber operations against critical infrastructure in the United States and abroad.
- Integrity Technology Group, a Chinese-based information security company, operated the tools and has been identified by the FBI as the actual identity of Flax Typhoon, maintaining close ties with the Chinese government.
- Known as "Microscan" and "FishHub," the seized tools targeted a U.S. power company, Japanese and Polish airports, Taiwanese universities, and a multinational, nongovernmental organization across critical infrastructure.
- FBI Cyber Division Deputy Assistant Director Jason Bilnoski called the hacking operation "indiscriminate and reckless," noting the bureau aims to remove threat actor capabilities by targeting their infrastructure, money, and tools.
- Monitoring for future attempts to rebuild, FBI San Diego Supervisory Special Agent Brett Lally stated the bureau will continue watching the company, adding that the disruption's impact on its ability to operate in China remains to be seen.
