The European Space Agency (ESA) will launch the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) satellite on the night of September 14-15, culminating more than twenty years of scientific and technological development led by José Moreno, professor of Earth Physics at the University of Valencia (UV). The mission opens a new window into the study of how vegetation functions and its response to climate change.

Plants glow when they operate photosynthesis, but so weak that no human eye perceives the signal. ESA mission FLEX wants to map this light from orbit for the first time from 15 September 2026 onward. The satellite measures how actively plants convert solar energy into biomass, and often shows dry stress or heat damage before leaves visibly wither.
