For many Baslers, the highlight of the year begins when it says "Morgestraich – Forward march!". This time, the cliques are cultivating the crisis at the traditional prelude to Basel's Fasnacht, as shown by the colourful subjects.

Basel started the Fasnacht on early Monday morning. Traditionally, the "Morgestraich" was the kick-off, in which several thousand participants travelled through the city centre.
On Monday, February 23, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., the morningstraich begins in Basel – and thus the famous Basler Fasnacht. With the command "Morgestraich – vorwärf, march!" all lights go out in the city centre. Only the artfully painted lanterns of the cliques shine through the dark alleys.
