Dog Owners Warned Pets May Become Confused During Eclipse
Veterinarians say the sudden drop in daylight may leave some dogs restless, pacing or expecting their evening meal.
Dog owners are being warned to expect unusual behavior from pets during tonight's solar eclipse, though experts note the eclipse is not believed to pose direct danger. The partial eclipse will begin shortly after 6pm.
Darren Beale, CEO of Years, explained that dogs will not understand that an eclipse is taking place. Instead, animals may interpret the sudden drop in light as an early sunset, prompting them to seek their beds or evening meals.
Beale advised against using eye protection on pets, stating "Trying to put eclipse glasses on a dog could cause more stress than the eclipse itself." Owners should maintain normal routines for meals and walks to help keep pets calm.
Unusual crowds, noise and excitement outside could be more unsettling than the eclipse itself, particularly for nervous dogs, Beale said. More sensitive pets may become restless, pace, or seek reassurance as the sky darkens.
Providing a quiet, familiar space will help pets relax during the event, experts suggest. If a dog displays severe or persistent signs of distress, owners are encouraged to contact their vet for professional advice.
