The 10 cars most at risk of being fined for undeclared modifications
A survey of 2,000 UK drivers found 13% discovered hidden changes only after buying a used car, with undeclared mods risking cancelled cover.
Research from car marketplace Cazoo and car insurance broker Tempcover identified 10 vehicles most likely to have undeclared modifications, including the Volkswagen Golf GTI and BMW 3 Series.
Tempcover's research found 91% of drivers fail to declare unofficial Apple CarPlay or touchscreen retrofits, while 88% miss non-factory parking sensors or upgraded sound systems.
Cazoo motoring expert Michael Golson warned that reversing tampered emissions equipment is costly, stating, "The big risk is the cost of reversing it, as replacing tampered emissions equipment can easily run into four figures – with a replacement DPF costing around £1,000 to £3,500."
Claire Wills-McKissick, temporary car insurance expert at Tempcover, cautioned that concealing material vehicle changes can lead to insurance fraud, resulting in cancelled policies, potential fines, and penalty points.
Research indicates 13% of drivers discover undeclared modifications after purchasing a used car, prompting experts to advise buyers to check vehicle handbooks and ask sellers direct questions about past changes.
