CAIR Sues Texas over Terrorist Designation
Governor Abbott ordered a criminal probe and banned land purchases by CAIR and Muslim Brotherhood, labeling them terrorist groups and prompting a lawsuit from CAIR.
- On Thursday, Gov. Greg Abbott instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety to open a criminal investigation into the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR, barred their land purchases, and authorized the Texas Attorney General to sue.
- Abbott said the statewide moves stem from counterterrorism aims to identify, disrupt and eradicate terrorist organizations and address threats after months ago Texas Republicans challenged the East Plano Islamic Center community and Earlier this year the Justice Department closed a civil rights inquiry.
- The lawsuit notes neither organization is a U.S. designated terrorist group, as CAIR has 25 chapters nationwide and eight employees and two independent contractors in Texas.
- On Thursday, the Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin chapters of the Council on American-Islamic Relations filed a federal lawsuit asking a judge to strike down Abbott's proclamation as unconstitutional; CAIR said it has won three prior suits against Abbott, while Abbott's office did not respond.
- Community advocates responded that the claims are misleading, while Gov. Greg Abbott said the state will focus on individuals or groups allegedly imposing Sharia law violating the Texas Constitution and state statutes.
