Texas Instruments Starts Production at New Sherman Fab
The $30 billion Sherman facility aims to produce over 100 million microchips daily and create 3,000 local jobs to boost U.S. chip manufacturing capacity.
- On Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025, Texas Instruments opened SM1, a million-square-foot 300mm semiconductor wafer fab already producing wafers, with a ribbon-cutting attended by TI executives and Gov. Greg Abbott.
- Built after breaking ground in 2022, the project reflects a domestic chip-making push tied to former President Joe Biden's administration and aims to shorten supply chains after pandemic disruptions, experts say.
- Over a 3.5-year build, crews excavated more than two million cubic yards of earth and poured over 240,000 cubic yards of concrete; SM2 is largely in place and ready to start production, TI said.
- The megasite will provide about 3,000 local jobs, and TI says chips from the plant will support AI data centers and advances in vehicles and medical devices.
- Officials described the Sherman plant as a $40 billion factory expected to produce millions of chips per day, part of the planned Grayson County megasite costing more than $30 billion as TI touts over $60 billion in domestic manufacturing investment.
