Terrace Bowling Centre building a complete loss after fire

Fire crews salvaged custom shoes and balls as the building was declared a total loss, officials said.

  • Fire destroyed the Terrace Bowling Lanes on Lazelle Avenue early on May 21, after patrolling Terrace RCMP officers discovered the blaze at 4:29 a.m. and triggered a full-scale response from the Terrace Fire Department and the Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department.
  • Originally a modified Quonset hut built from 1950s surplus Second World War materials, the building was purchased by the City in 2019 for future expansion. Theresa Moffat, who began bowling there 55 years ago, has leased the space since then.
  • Fire officials noted the blaze started in the entrance alcove, though the cause remains undetermined. Firefighters recovered pale blue metallic lockers holding custom gear for bowlers Blanche Keehn and Doug Borgford, who are preparing for national competitions at month's end.
  • Crews dismantled the rear of the building to access the flames while leaseholder Moffat and longtime bowler Michelle Hruby watched from the sidewalk. "Just think of all the birthday parties," Hruby said.
  • With the Terrace lanes destroyed, the only remaining bowling alleys outside of Prince George are in Smithers and Houston. Moffat said her bowling days are over, stating, "I'll be at home quilting.
