Tennessee Democratic Senator Suspended From Committee over Special Session Protest | Chattanooga Times Free Press
Charlane Oliver lost committee duties and state funding privileges after standing on her desk during a protest against the redistricting vote.
- Senate Speaker Randy McNally notified Nashville Sen. Charlane Oliver on Wednesday that she faces committee reassignment and travel reimbursement cuts for her May 7 floor protest against Republican-drawn congressional maps.
- During the final minutes of a special session on May 7, Oliver stood on her desk holding a banner reading "No Jim Crow 2.0" to protest the maps dividing Memphis into three districts, which critics alleged diluted Black voting power.
- McNally removed Oliver from the Government Operations Committee, calling her actions a "clear violation of Senate decorum," while stating he has treated Democratic members "fairly and consistently" throughout his tenure as speaker.
- Defending her actions, Oliver said she will "never apologize for fighting for the Tennesseans" and called the punishment the "most brazen attack on Black political representation" seen since Jim Crow.
- McNally also sent reprimands to five other Democrats who showed solidarity, while House lawmakers faced similar committee removals earlier this month after protests against the redistricting maps.
