Dog rescued after floating out to sea on kayak

A sightseeing boat found Bruce after a two-hour search, and crew members pulled the hypothermic dog aboard before wrapping him in towels.

  • Bruce, an Alsatian, was rescued from the North Sea after drifting more than 4 kilometres offshore in an inflatable kayak from the coast of Bamburgh, Northumberland, England.
  • Earlier, a wind 'whipped up with the change of tide and caught them off-guard,' causing the kayak to drift; the owner attempted to swim after it before turning back to call for help.
  • Australian Jimmy Reid, skipper of Serenity Farne Islands Boat Tours, located Bruce after the dog had been floating for about two hours, while crewman Aaron hauled him aboard by the scruff of his neck.
  • Suffering from hypothermia in about 8 degrees Celsius water, Bruce was wrapped in towels to warm up and perked up within 30 minutes before being reunited with his owner.
  • Reid patted Bruce, saying, 'You are the goodest of boys,' though he noted the rescue was difficult since man-overboard equipment 'didn't really work with the dog, unfortunately.
