Nigeria: Police Chief Speaks On Alleged Ransom Payment for Freed 20 NYSC Members
Audu Bosso said police were unaware of ransom payments as parents claimed they paid N5 million to N6 million for the release.
- On Thursday, Imo State Police Commissioner Audu Bosso denied knowledge of any ransom payments for 20 freed National Youth Service Corps members, insisting security operatives secured their release through intense pressure.
- The 20 NYSC members were abducted October 1 while traveling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states along the Owerri-Onitsha Road near Umunoha in Imo State.
- Parents alleged paying N6 million in ransom to abductors, yet Bosso stated, "I am not aware whether a ransom was paid or not. We did what we were supposed to do as professionals."
- Authorities have fortified the attack axis, Bosso said, with mobile units and intelligence teams conducting "ongoing coordinated operations" to ensure perpetrators are arrested.
- Inspector-General of Police Tunji Duso has deployed additional tactical teams to the region to prevent recurrence, as security forces continue "combing the bushes" to track down the unidentified attackers.
