Mom Gets Keyboard Tattooed on Arm to Help Her Non-Verbal Autistic Son Communicate
Jessica Fletcher’s tattoo adds Yes and No buttons, emotion symbols and an I love you message after her son’s AAC device failed.
Canadian mother Jessica Fletcher tattooed a computer keyboard on her forearm to provide a permanent communication method for her 11-year-old son, Hunter, who is nonverbal.
After Hunter lost access to his Augmentative and Alternative Communication device when its battery died at a restaurant, Fletcher realized he needed a backup that did not rely on technology.
The tattoo features a complete keyboard, symbols for emotions, and buttons for "Yes" and "No," positioning Hunter to reach letters while Fletcher observes his selections.
A video of Hunter using the tattoo gained more than one million views online, with Fletcher stating, "we remove communication barriers, we're giving non-speakers the chance to show us who they really are."
Other parents have adopted similar tattoos while a clothing company developed keyboard-printed sleeves; students at Hunter's school requested shirts with the design to whisper and share secrets.
Being used to using a device to express yourself, Jessica Fletcher was looking for a solution that would allow her to communicate even if the battery or technology failed.
The little Hunter has difficulty in verbal language and is usually communicating through electrical tools. The idea of Mother Jessica to fight the dependence on smartphones and to prevent the battery from downloading 'silence' her son
